Day 1: Arrival & The Sacred South
Depending on your flight arrival time, explore the architectural and spiritual gems of Southern Tripura.
-
Neermahal (The Water Palace): Visit Northeast India’s only water palace, built in the middle of the Rudrasagar Lake. A perfect blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles, this summer residence of the Manikya dynasty looks like it is floating on water. Access to the palace is via a scenic boat ride through the lake.
-
Tripura Sundari Temple (Matabari): Pay homage at one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Hindu mythology. Located in the ancient capital of Udaipur, the temple structure resembles the hump of a tortoise (Kurma Peeth). It is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in the Northeast, dedicated to Goddess Kali.
-
Kasba Kali Bari (For arrivals before 11:00 AM): Travel to the Indo-Bangladesh border to visit this serene temple perched on a hillock overlooking the Kamalasagar Lake. The 15th-century idol of Goddess Kali here is made of sandstone. The site offers a unique view where the lake acts as a natural border between India and Bangladesh.
Day 2: The Lost Hill of Faces & Royal Heritage
A journey to the ancient rock carvings of the north and the royal heart of the capital.
-
Unakoti: Explore this archaeological wonder, whose name translates to "one less than a crore." It is a Shiva pilgrimage site featuring massive bas-relief sculptures carved directly into the rock face of the hills. The central attraction is the 30-foot-high bust of "Unakotishwara Kal Bhairav." The site requires a walk through lush greenery to view the thousands of stone idols scattered across the hill.
-
Ujjayanta Palace: Return to Agartala to visit the former royal palace of the Tripura kings. Built by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya, this gleaming white edifice is set amidst large Mughal-style gardens. It now houses the State Museum, showcasing the lifestyle, arts, and culture of Northeast India’s diverse communities.
Day 3: The Amazon of Tripura & Island Lakes
Immerse yourself in the raw nature and river mysteries of the Amarpur and Gandacherra subdivisions.
-
Chabimura (Devitamura): Experience the "Amazon of Tripura" with a boat ride on the Gomati River. The steep vertical rock walls flanking the river are adorned with ancient panels of carvings, including the massive image of Goddess Chakrakma (Durga). The journey through the lush green gorge is as mesmerizing as the history etched on the cliffs.
-
Dumboor Lake: Visit this massive water body spread over 41 sq km, known for its 48 islands. The lake is the confluence of the Raima and Sarma rivers. It is a haven for migratory birds and offers a tranquil environment surrounded by vegetation. During winter, the lake attracts thousands of birds, making it a paradise for nature lovers.
