Day 1: Guwahati to Bomdila - The Himalayan Gateway

Begin your journey by driving from the plains of Assam into the mist-covered hills of Arunachal Pradesh, heading towards the scenic town of Bomdila.

  1. Gontse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery (Bomdila Monastery): Visit one of the most prominent centers of the Lamaistic faith of Mahayana Buddhism. Divided into Upper, Middle, and Lower Gompas, this monastery offers spiritual solace and panoramic views of the entire Bomdila township. The prayer wheels and vibrant murals depict stories from Buddhist mythology.

  2. Bomdila View Point: If time and weather permit, visit this vantage point which offers breathtaking views of the massive Himalayan terrain and the Nechipu Pass. It is an excellent spot to witness the clouds descending upon the valley.

Day 2: Bomdila to Tawang - The Valley of Dirang

Travel deeper into the mountains towards Tawang, making a significant stop at the beautiful valley of Dirang to explore its natural and cultural landmarks.

  1. Dirang Dzong: Explore this 17th-century fort (fortified village) that represents the rich Monpa heritage. The architecture is unique, built to protect the region from neighboring invasions, and it houses a small settlement within its walls where traditional life continues.

  2. Dirang Hot Water Spring: Visit the natural sulphur springs located just outside the main town. These springs are believed to have medicinal properties and offer a warm respite amidst the chilly mountain air. The location is situated by the river, providing a scenic backdrop.

  3. National Yak Research Centre: Stop by this unique facility (located near Dirang) dedicated to the research and conservation of yaks. It provides insight into the importance of this animal to the high-altitude economy and lifestyle.

Day 3: Tawang - High Altitude Passes & War Legends

Dedicate this day to exploring the high-altitude marvels surrounding Tawang, including the borders and historic memorials.

  1. Bumla Pass: Drive to the Indo-China border located at an altitude of 15,200 feet. This pass holds immense strategic importance and offers a surreal landscape of snow and stark terrain. It is also a designated Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) point between the Indian Army and the People's Liberation Army of China.

  2. Sela Pass: Witness one of the highest motorable passes in the world at 13,700 feet. The pass is adorned with the majestic Sela Lake (Paradise Lake), which often remains frozen during the winter. The area is decorated with colorful Buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the wind.

  3. Jaswant Garh War Memorial: Visit the memorial dedicated to Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles, a hero of the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Unlike a typical memorial, it is maintained like an active post where soldiers serve him as if he were still alive. The site offers a deep sense of patriotism and history.

Day 4: Tawang to Bomdila - Descent to the Foothills

Retrace your path back to Bomdila, enjoying the changing landscapes from the high snow-clad peaks back to the lush temperate forests.

  1. Bomdila Craft Centre: Visit the local craft center known for its exquisite dragon designs on carpets, traditional Monpa masks, and Thangka paintings. It is a great place to witness local artisans at work and pick up authentic souvenirs that support the local economy.

  2. RR Hill: Enjoy a visit to RR Hill, the highest point in Bomdila. It offers scenic views of the roads winding through the hills and the Bhutanese border on the horizon.

Day 5: Bomdila to Guwahati - The Divine Finale

Descend from the hills back to the plains of Guwahati, ending the trip with a spiritual visit to one of India’s most revered temples.

  1. Maa Kamakhya Temple: Visit this ancient Shakti Peetha located on the Nilachal Hill. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Tantric Hinduism.
